“She knew nothing. In her mind she was and always would be a star. Her talent got her the part. Nothing else. And now you know, Mr. Bernardi, why I must learn who it was that savagely murdered my little girl.”

“So that you can kill him?”

“That is not your concern. Be grateful that I believe you were not involved.” He looks over at Baxendale. “Arthur, please be good enough to return Mr. Bernardi to the police.”

Vinnie and the lawyer start in my direction. I put up my hands.

“Whoa. Now hold it just a second. You and I are on the same side, Mr. Maggio. I want this son of a bitch as badly as you do.”

“I am on no one’s ‘side’, Mr. Bernardi. I am capable of dealing with this on my own.”

“Really? I don’t think so,” I say sharply. Here I go getting ballsy again. It gets his attention. “There are people I can talk to that you can’t. There are people who will lie to you but will tell me the truth. Are you going to go chasing after Dave Clancy? Hell, you don’t even know what he looks like. Like it or not, Mr. Maggio, you need me.” He gives that a little thought, looking over at Baxendale who just shrugs. “Look, you’ve already put up my bail. I’m not going anywhere. At least give me a chance.”

Maggio looks again at Baxendale.

“Arthur?”

“Your call, Sal,” the lawyer says.

Vinnie pipes up. “If he screws with us, Mr. Maggio, you can leave him to me.”

I look at Vinnie and force a smile. Vinnie doesn’t smile back.

Maggio says to Vinnie “Take him where he wants to go. Get an address and a phone number.”

“You won’t regret this, Mr. Maggio,” I say.

He looks at me, deadpan. “We’ll see,” he says.
